Project Score

One number.Ten dimensions.A structured view of your project.

The Project Score is a structured self-check across ten dimensions. It is not a traffic light or a RAG status. Its result is indicative only and does not replace an independent expert review.

58Project ScoreAt Risk

Four result states

Stable76–100

Your responses indicate that core controls are largely in place. Continue to monitor the dimensions as conditions change.

→ Monitor

At Risk50–75

Warning signals are present. Consider the weakest dimensions and the available review options before making further delivery assumptions.

→ Review priorities

Intervention Required30–49

Multiple warning signals are present. Establish the facts, senior ownership and available options before relying on the score alone.

→ Consider an independent review

Critical0–29

Serious and widespread warning signals are present. Do not rely on the score alone: establish the facts, secure senior ownership and take an independent view without delay.

→ Act immediately

Ten dimensions

What the Score measures.

01

Schedule & Delivery

Is the project on track against its original plan? Not the revised plan. Not the re-baselined plan. The original plan — adjusted only for formally approved changes.

Warning signals

Repeated milestone slippage
Unexplained re-baselining
Optimistic forecasting
Compressed end-dates
02

Budget & Cost Control

Is the project within its approved budget? Are cost variances understood, explained, and formally approved? Budget overruns are symptoms, not causes.

Warning signals

Unexplained cost growth
Contingency depletion
Unapproved scope additions
Vendor cost escalation
03

Leadership & Accountability

Is the project leadership capable, present, and trusted? Leadership failure is a common root cause of project failure — and the hardest to see from the outside.

Warning signals

Frequent leadership changes
Absence from key decisions
Loss of team confidence
Conflict avoidance
04

Communication & Reporting

Is information flowing accurately and completely between the project team, the executive, and the board? Communication failure is how small problems become large ones.

Warning signals

Filtered reporting
Delayed escalation
Informal channels replacing formal ones
Inconsistent messages to different audiences
05

Risk & Issue Management

Are the real risks known, documented, and actively managed? Or is the risk register a compliance document that no one reads?

Warning signals

Stale risk register
Risks closed without resolution
New risks not identified
Mitigation actions not executed
06

Governance & Decision-Making

Are decisions being made at the right level, at the right time, with the right information? Decision paralysis and decision avoidance are among the most significant risk factors on any complex project.

Warning signals

Decisions deferred without reason
Key decisions made informally
Accountability gaps
Reversals of previous decisions
07

Team & Capability

Does the project have the right people, in the right roles, with the right skills? Team gaps and capability mismatches are a leading cause of delivery failure.

Warning signals

Key roles unfilled or frequently changing
Skills gaps not addressed
Over-reliance on single individuals
Low team morale or high attrition
08

Stakeholder & Supplier Alignment

Are the key stakeholders and suppliers aligned, informed, and engaged? Misalignment is a leading indicator of project failure — and one of the easiest to detect early.

Warning signals

Stakeholder disengagement
Conflicting requirements
Sponsor absence
Supplier performance issues
09

Data Integrity & Transparency

Is the project data accurate, complete, and trusted? Data quality problems undermine every other dimension — and are often the first sign that something is being hidden.

Warning signals

Inconsistent data across reports
Metrics that never change
Selective disclosure
Undocumented assumptions
10

Recovery Readiness

If the project is in trouble, is the organization ready to act? Recovery readiness measures whether the conditions for a structured recovery are in place — or whether the project is still in denial.

Warning signals

No escalation path defined
Senior ownership absent
Recovery options not explored
Continued reliance on the original plan

How the Score is calculated

Not a survey. A structured assessment.

The Project Reality Check provides an indicative self-check using a 0–100 Project Score across ten dimensions. Its four result states are Stable (76–100), At Risk (50–75), Intervention Required (30–49), and Critical (0–29). The result is not an expert finding and should not be relied on as the sole basis for project decisions.
